The film is based on the true-life, then controversial romance between Botswana king Sir Seretse Khama and his English wife, Ruth Williams Khama. After years in exile in England, Khama would return to Botswana and his family and eventually become its first President. His younger child, Ian Khama, would also later become the current President of Botswana.
